A Brief History

• The College is named after Arahath Ananda, the chief disciple of Gauthama Buddha.
• Ananda College is the leading Buddhist school in Sri Lanka.
• The College was started (c.1886) by a movement initiated by Colonel Henry Steele Olcott,  (Photo) an American citizen and a founder member of the Theosophical Society of New York 
• Ananda's Role in Buddhist Education by Prof.J.B. Dissanayake of the University of Colombo.
• The AOA UK was established in 1982 by the past pupils of the College who were resident in UK, to conduct activities compatible with the stated aims of the Association.
